Wide plank flooring refers to flooring planks that are typically 6 inches or wider. The wider planks create a more dramatic, rustic appearance and can make rooms look larger and more open. They showcase more of the wood’s natural grain patterns and character, including knots, mineral streaks, and other unique markings that give each plank distinctive personality. Wide plank flooring is often associated with historical homes, particularly colonial and farmhouse styles, since wider planks were more common in earlier centuries when trees were larger and more readily available. Today, it’s popular in both traditional and contemporary design settings. Common widths for wide plank flooring include 5″, 6″, 7″, and up to 10″ or even wider in some cases. The planks can be made from various wood species like oak, pine, maple, hickory, or reclaimed wood. Installation and maintenance are similar to standard hardwood flooring, though the wider planks may be more prone to seasonal expansion and contraction due to their size. Wide Floors is part of the Joinery block of companies which reclaimed the Sears Complex in Chicago in 1994.
